What is SCAMPER Brainstorming?

A structured ideation framework using seven prompts: Substitute, Combine, Adapt, Modify, Put to other use, Eliminate, Reverse. Transforms an existing product or idea by systematically exploring each lens.

How do you do SCAMPER Brainstorming?

  1. 1.Start with an existing product, service, process, or problem you want to improve
  2. 2.Work through each SCAMPER prompt: What can you Substitute? Combine with something else? Adapt from another domain? Modify/magnify/minimize? Put to another use? Eliminate? Reverse?
  3. 3.Spend 5-10 minutes on each prompt, writing down every idea without judgment
  4. 4.After all seven, review ideas and star the 3-5 most promising
  5. 5.Develop the best ideas further with feasibility analysis and rapid prototyping

45-90 minutes per brainstorming session.
