Visual brainstorming technique starting with a central idea and branching outward with associated concepts, using colors, images, and spatial arrangement to leverage visual-spatial thinking.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEmoderate
How do you do Mind Mapping?
- 1.Place your central topic in the middle of a blank page (landscape orientation)
- 2.Draw branches radiating outward for major sub-topics, using different colors for each
- 3.Add sub-branches with specific ideas, keywords, or questions — use single words or short phrases, not sentences
- 4.Include simple drawings, symbols, or icons wherever possible — visuals increase memory retention
- 5.Review and reorganize: look for unexpected connections between branches that suggest new ideas
How long does it take?
15-30 minutes per mind map.
Is it hard to start?
easy.
Source: Tony Buzan (The Mind Map Book, 1993). Research: Farrand et al. (2002) found mind mapping improved long-term memory of factual material by 10% vs conventional notes. Widely used in education and business brainstorming.
