What is Improv Exercises?

Improvisational theater techniques applied to everyday creativity and collaboration. The 'Yes, And' principle trains you to build on ideas rather than shut them down, and comfort with uncertainty.

How do you do Improv Exercises?

  1. 1.Learn the core principle: 'Yes, And' — accept what's offered and build on it (never 'No, but')
  2. 2.Practice 'word association chains' daily: say a word, then quickly say the next word that comes to mind — speed kills the inner critic
  3. 3.Do 'one-word story' with a partner: alternate adding one word each to build a story together
  4. 4.Try 'worst idea first': deliberately generate terrible ideas before good ones — lowers the bar and reduces creative block
  5. 5.Take an improv class or join a practice group — the social element is central to the technique

How long does it take?

30-60 minutes per week for practice; 2-3 hours for classes.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
