creativity · medium · 2-4 hours per week for exploration; ongoing mindset shift

What is Cross-Pollination?

Deliberately exposing yourself to ideas, methods, and perspectives from domains completely unrelated to your work. Breakthrough innovations most often come from connecting ideas across different fields.

How do you do Cross-Pollination?

  1. 1.Read one book or article per month from a field completely unrelated to your work
  2. 2.Attend events outside your industry: art gallery openings, science lectures, cooking classes, improv shows
  3. 3.When facing a problem, ask: 'How would a biologist/chef/architect/musician solve this?'
  4. 4.Build a diverse network: befriend people with different expertise, backgrounds, and worldviews
  5. 5.Keep a 'connections journal' — when you encounter an interesting idea from another field, write how it might apply to your work

How long does it take?

2-4 hours per week for exploration; ongoing mindset shift.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
