How do you do Flow State Engineering?
- 1.Match challenge to skill at the 4% rule: the task should be approximately 4% more difficult than your current ability — easy enough that you're not anxious, hard enough that you're not bored
- 2.Eliminate all distractions before starting: phone on airplane mode in another room, close all browser tabs except what you need, use a website blocker (Cold Turkey, Freedom), tell others you're unavailable
- 3.Create a flow trigger ritual: use the same music playlist, same workspace setup, same beverage, and same starting action each time to build a Pavlovian cue that primes your brain for deep focus
- 4.Work in 90-minute flow blocks aligned with ultradian rhythms: set a timer for 90 minutes of uninterrupted deep work, then take a genuine 15-20 minute break (walk, stretch — not phone)
- 5.Set clear goals with immediate feedback: before starting, define exactly what 'done' looks like for this session; break the task into steps small enough that you can see progress within minutes
How long does it take?
90-min blocks, 2-3 per day maximum.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
