Essentialism

structure · hard · Ongoing mindset shift, 1-2 hours monthly for elimination review

What is Essentialism?

Systematic discipline for discerning the vital few from the trivial many, then eliminating everything nonessential to make the highest possible contribution toward what really matters. Replaces 'I have to do everything' with 'the right thing, in the right way, at the right time.'

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Essentialism?

  1. 1.Apply the 90% Rule to every opportunity: if it doesn't score above 90 on your most important criteria, it's an automatic no
  2. 2.Conduct an Essentialist audit: list everything on your plate, then for each item ask 'If I didn't already have this commitment, how hard would I fight to get it?' — eliminate anything that doesn't pass
  3. 3.Practice the 'slow yes, fast no': when asked to commit to something new, default to 'Let me check my calendar and get back to you' — then apply your criteria privately
  4. 4.Identify the one obstacle that, if removed, would make the majority of other obstacles disappear — focus your energy there
  5. 5.Build a personal 'editing' practice: regularly remove activities, commitments, and possessions that no longer serve your essential intent

How long does it take?

Ongoing mindset shift, 1-2 hours monthly for elimination review.

Is it hard to start?

hard.
