What is Mental Contrasting?

Oettingen's Fantasy Realization Theory technique where you first vividly imagine a desired future outcome, then immediately contrast it with present reality obstacles, which creates a cognitive link between future and reality that energizes goal-directed behavior.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEstrong

How do you do Mental Contrasting?

  1. 1.Select a personally important wish or goal for the next 1-4 weeks
  2. 2.Spend 3 minutes in 'indulging' mode: vividly imagine the best possible outcome — immerse yourself in the positive feelings, images, and sensations of success
  3. 3.Immediately switch to 'dwelling' mode: identify the most critical inner obstacle in your present reality. Visualize yourself encountering this obstacle in detail
  4. 4.Notice the 'energization' effect: the contrast between the desired future and present obstacle creates motivational tension that drives action
  5. 5.Important: the ORDER matters — fantasy first, then obstacle. Reversing the order (obstacle first) fails to produce the motivational effect

How long does it take?

5-7 minutes per session.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
