Straw Breathing (Pursed-Lip Vagal Activation)

What is Straw Breathing (Pursed-Lip Vagal Activation)?
Exhaling slowly through a straw (or pursed lips mimicking a straw) to create back-pressure that stimulates the vagus nerve and activates the parasympathetic nervous system. The extended, resisted exhale engages the diaphragm more deeply and naturally lengthens the exhale relative to the inhale — a pattern proven to shift the body from stress to calm. Used clinically for COPD, anxiety, and post-surgical recovery. Can be done anywhere with or without an actual straw.

How do you do Straw Breathing (Pursed-Lip Vagal Activation)?
- 1.Sit or stand comfortably; if using a straw, hold a standard drinking straw between your lips (thinner straw = more resistance = stronger effect)
- 2.Inhale fully through your nose for a count of 4, allowing the belly and ribcage to expand
- 3.Place the straw in your mouth (or purse your lips as if holding an invisible straw) and exhale slowly and gently through the straw for a count of 6-8 — do not force the air out, let it flow against the gentle resistance
- 4.When your exhalation is about 80-90% complete, remove the straw, close your mouth, and finish the exhale naturally and gently through your nose
- 5.Continue for 5-10 minutes; the extended exhale through resistance naturally slows breathing rate toward the resonant frequency of 5-6 breaths per minute; can also be used as an acute tool (5-6 breaths) during anxiety or panic
How long does it take?
5-10 minutes, 1-3 times daily.
Is it hard to start?
