Berberine (Metformin Alternative)
Supplementation · easy · 2 min/day (supplement with meals)
What is Berberine (Metformin Alternative)?
Berberine is a plant alkaloid that activates AMPK (the same pathway as metformin) and improves insulin sensitivity, blood sugar, and lipid profiles. Unlike metformin, berberine doesn't blunt exercise adaptations — a 2019 study found metformin inhibited mitochondrial gains from aerobic training. Berberine at 1g/day matches metformin for blood sugar reduction in diabetics. However, its bioavailability is <1% vs metformin's 60%.
Is there evidence for it?
EVIDENCEmoderate — matches metformin for blood sugar in diabetics; activates AMPK without blunting exercise benefits; doesn't interfere with mitochondrial adaptations; however, no direct longevity trials in humans and very low oral bioavailability (<1%)
How do you do Berberine (Metformin Alternative)?
- 1.Take 500 mg berberine 2-3 times daily with meals (total 1000-1500 mg/day); split dosing improves absorption and reduces GI side effects
- 2.Cycle berberine: 8 weeks on, 2-4 weeks off to prevent adaptation and maintain effectiveness
- 3.Do not combine with metformin without medical supervision — both lower blood sugar and together may cause hypoglycemia
- 4.Take separately from other medications by at least 2 hours — berberine can affect drug metabolism through CYP enzyme inhibition
- 5.Monitor fasting glucose and HbA1c every 3 months to track effectiveness; target fasting glucose 72-85 mg/dL
How long does it take?
2 min/day (supplement with meals).
Is it hard to start?
easy.
