What is DHEA Supplementation for Aging?

DHEA (dehydroepiandrosterone) is a hormone that peaks in your 20s and declines steadily with age. It's a precursor to both testosterone and estrogen. While marketed as an anti-aging supplement, evidence for lifespan extension is lacking. Demonstrated benefits are limited to skin hydration/collagen and vaginal tissue health in postmenopausal women. It's available over-the-counter but carries real hormonal risks.

Is there evidence for it?

EVIDENCEweak — no study has shown DHEA extends lifespan; no proven benefits for cognitive function, bone strength, muscle strength, or physical performance in older adults; limited evidence for skin and vaginal health only; carries hormonal risks

How do you do DHEA Supplementation for Aging?

  1. 1.Get baseline DHEA-S blood levels tested before starting; only supplement if levels are below age-appropriate ranges
  2. 2.Start with 25 mg/day for women, 50 mg/day for men; do not exceed 50 mg/day without medical supervision
  3. 3.Take in the morning to mimic natural circadian hormone production; take with food
  4. 4.Monitor hormone levels (testosterone, estrogen, DHEA-S) every 3-6 months — DHEA can elevate estrogen and worsen hormone-sensitive cancers
  5. 5.Contraindicated in history of breast, ovarian, uterine, or prostate cancer; discontinue if experiencing acne, hair loss, or mood changes

How long does it take?

1 min/day (supplement) + biannual blood work.

Is it hard to start?
