Visualization for Performance

What is Visualization for Performance?

Mentally rehearse a skill, conversation, or performance in vivid detail before doing it. Olympic athletes spend 30%+ of training time on visualization because the brain activates the same neural pathways whether you physically perform or vividly imagine.

How do you do Visualization for Performance?

  1. 1.Find a quiet space, close your eyes, and create a vivid mental movie of yourself performing the skill or event
  2. 2.Engage ALL senses: see the environment, hear the sounds, feel your body moving, smell the air. The more vivid, the more effective
  3. 3.Run through the performance in real-time (not sped up). Include the setup, the action, the successful outcome, and your emotional response
  4. 4.Visualize from FIRST PERSON perspective (seeing through your own eyes), not third person. First person activates motor cortex more strongly
  5. 5.Do 5-10 minutes of visualization daily for 2 weeks before an important event. For skills: visualize the practice session, not just the performance

How long does it take?

5-10 minutes per session.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
