Circadian Light Management

What is Circadian Light Management?

Your circadian rhythm is controlled by light. Bright blue-enriched light in the morning tells your brain 'it's day' (alertness, cortisol, energy). Warm dim light in the evening tells your brain 'it's night' (melatonin, sleep onset). Managing light is managing your biology.

How do you do Circadian Light Management?

  1. 1.Morning (within 1 hour of waking): get bright light — sunlight is best (10,000+ lux), or use a 10,000 lux light therapy lamp for 20-30 minutes while eating breakfast
  2. 2.Daytime: maximize exposure to bright light. Work near windows, take outdoor breaks, keep lights bright. Bright daytime light enhances nighttime melatonin production
  3. 3.Evening (2-3 hours before bed): switch to warm, dim lighting. Use smart bulbs set to 2700K or lower, use amber/red-tinted glasses, or simply use candles and lamps instead of overhead lights
  4. 4.Night: total darkness for sleep. Blackout curtains, no standby LEDs (cover with tape), phone face-down in another room. Even dim light through closed eyelids disrupts melatonin
  5. 5.The 30-second version: maximum light in the morning, minimum light at night. Get this right and sleep, energy, and mood all improve simultaneously

How long does it take?

No extra time — just awareness of light exposure.
