Time-Restricted Eating (16:8 / OMAD)

What is Time-Restricted Eating (16:8 / OMAD)?
Confining all daily food intake to a specific window — typically 8 hours (16:8) or as narrow as 1 hour (OMAD). The 16:8 model is the most studied TRE protocol with adherence rates exceeding 95%. Mechanisms include metabolic switching from glucose to fatty acid/ketone utilization, enhanced insulin sensitivity, and modulation of the IGF-1 axis. Important caveat: most metabolic improvements appear driven by spontaneous caloric restriction rather than meal timing alone.

How do you do Time-Restricted Eating (16:8 / OMAD)?
- 1.Start with 14:10 for the first week (e.g., eat 8am-6pm), then narrow to 16:8 (e.g., noon-8pm) over 2-3 weeks; if well-tolerated, experiment with 18:6 or 20:4
- 2.Anchor your eating window to align with circadian rhythm — earlier windows (e.g., 8am-4pm) show better metabolic outcomes than late-night eating, though adherence often favors noon-8pm
- 3.During fasting hours, consume only water, black coffee, or plain tea — anything that triggers an insulin response breaks the metabolic fasting state
- 4.Break your fast with protein and fiber (not pure carbs) to avoid glucose spikes; within your eating window, prioritize whole foods and adequate protein (1.6-2.2g/kg bodyweight)
- 5.For OMAD: eat one large nutrient-dense meal per day, typically at dinner; ensure you hit caloric and micronutrient needs in a single sitting; not recommended for those with history of eating disorders
How long does it take?
No additional time (changes when you eat, not how long you spend).
Is it hard to start?
easy.
