Contrast Shower Protocol

What is Contrast Shower Protocol?
Alternate between hot and cold water in the shower: 1 minute hot, 30 seconds cold, repeat 3-5 cycles. This 'vascular exercise' forces blood vessels to dilate and constrict rapidly, improving circulation, reducing muscle soreness, boosting alertness, and training your autonomic nervous system.
Is there evidence for it?

How do you do Contrast Shower Protocol?
- 1.Start with your normal hot shower (2-3 minutes to warm up). Then switch to the coldest setting for 30 seconds. Then back to hot for 1 minute. That's one cycle
- 2.Do 3-5 cycles. Always END on cold — the alertness and mood boost come from the final cold exposure. Ending on hot just makes you sleepy
- 3.Breathe through the cold: slow exhale when the cold hits, don't gasp. Control the breath and you control the stress response. This is nervous system training
- 4.The mechanism: hot water dilates blood vessels (vasodilation), cold water constricts them (vasoconstriction). This pumping action improves circulation, reduces inflammation, and flushes metabolic waste from muscles
- 5.Easier than full cold showers because the hot intervals give you recovery. Many people who can't handle 2 minutes of pure cold can easily do 5 cycles of contrast. It's a gateway to cold exposure
How long does it take?
5-8 minutes added to shower.
Is it hard to start?
medium.
