One-In-One-Out Rule

life-systems · easy · 1 minute per purchase decision

What is One-In-One-Out Rule?

For every new item you bring into your home, one item of the same type must leave. Buy a new shirt? Donate an old one. New book? One goes to the library. Prevents the slow accumulation of clutter without requiring massive purge sessions. Maintains equilibrium after an initial declutter.

Is there evidence for it?

How do you do One-In-One-Out Rule?

  1. 1.Start with a one-time declutter of one area (closet, kitchen, bathroom — pick one)
  2. 2.From now on, every new purchase requires removing a comparable item first
  3. 3.Keep a donation box by the door — when it's full, drop it off immediately
  4. 4.Before buying: look at what you already own in that category — could you just use what you have?
  5. 5.Extend to digital: new app installed? Delete one. New subscription? Cancel one.

How long does it take?

1 minute per purchase decision.

Is it hard to start?

easy.
