What is Four Horsemen Antidotes (Gottman Conflict Protocol)?
Gottman's research identified four communication patterns — criticism, contempt, defensiveness, and stonewalling — that predict divorce with 93% accuracy. He calls them the 'Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse.' More importantly, he identified specific antidotes for each: gentle startup replaces criticism, building a culture of appreciation replaces contempt, taking responsibility replaces defensiveness, and physiological self-soothing replaces stonewalling.

How do you do Four Horsemen Antidotes (Gottman Conflict Protocol)?
- 1.Learn to recognize each horseman in your own behavior: Criticism ('You always...'), Contempt (eye-rolling, sarcasm, name-calling), Defensiveness ('It's not my fault, you...'), Stonewalling (shutting down, leaving)
- 2.Replace criticism with gentle startup: 'I feel [emotion] about [situation] and I need [request]' — focus on your feelings and needs, not your partner's character flaws
- 3.Replace contempt with appreciation: daily express genuine respect and gratitude — contempt grows only in the absence of admiration
- 4.Replace defensiveness with responsibility: find even 2% of the complaint you can own — 'You're right, I could have called'
- 5.Replace stonewalling with self-soothing: when you feel flooded, say 'I need 20 minutes to calm down, then I'll come back to this conversation' — and actually come back
