What is Emotional Bid Recognition Training?

Gottman's research found that couples who divorced 'turned toward' each other's emotional bids only 33% of the time, while couples who stayed together did so 86% of the time. A 'bid' is any attempt to connect — a sigh, a comment about the weather, showing you something on a phone. Learning to recognize and respond to these micro-moments is the single strongest predictor of relationship longevity.

How do you do Emotional Bid Recognition Training?

  1. 1.Learn the three responses to bids: 'turning toward' (engaging), 'turning away' (ignoring), 'turning against' (hostility)
  2. 2.For one week, practice noticing bids from your partner — they're often subtle: 'Look at that bird,' 'I had a tough day,' a hand on your shoulder
  3. 3.When you catch a bid, turn toward it within 3 seconds — even a simple 'hmm, tell me more' counts
  4. 4.Track your hit rate: at the end of each day, estimate how many bids you noticed and turned toward vs missed
  5. 5.Discuss with your partner what their bids look like — many people don't realize their own bids are invisible to their partner

How long does it take?

Ongoing awareness, 5 min/day reflection.

Is it hard to start?

medium.
